My Nightmare Experience with Uber Mauritius
What should have been a simple 20-minute ride turned into a 3-hour ordeal that ruined my first day in Mauritius. Here's my story as a warning to others.
The Airport Disaster
I landed at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport excited to start my vacation. I opened Uber, confident in a service I'd used successfully worldwide. That confidence was misplaced.
Attempt #1
Driver accepted, showed "5 minutes away." After 20 minutes of no movement, I called. No answer. Forced to cancel.
Attempt #2
New driver, same story. Accepted the ride, GPS showed him driving away from me. Cancelled after 15 minutes.
Attempt #3
Driver called immediately, demanded 3x the app price for "airport fee." I declined. He cancelled.
Attempts #4-7
Repeat of the above. Each time a different excuse, same result: no ride.
The Resolution
Finally, a hotel shuttle driver took pity on me and offered a ride. Cost the same as Uber quoted, arrived in 20 minutes. I should have done this from the start.
Lessons Learned
- Uber does not work in Mauritius - period
- Airport taxis are your only reliable option
- Book hotel transfers in advance
- Don't waste vacation time on broken apps
